There are hundreds, if not thousands of places in the US that have Spanish names. The easy ones to spot are any city or town that begins with the Word San or Santa was named by the Spanish after a saint.

There are 5 states with Spanish names and two more with names given to them by the Spanish.

Nevada (Snow fall)

Montana (Spanish Word is Montaña = Mountain)

Colorado (Spanish Word for red. Named after the red soil in the region)

Florida (Spanish Word for flowered or blooming)

California is the name of a mythical place in a book written by Garcia Ordóñez de Montalvo in the very early 1500s.

The Spanish named the following states but the names are NOT Spanish

Texas - native language Word meaning friends (Tejas)

New Mexico - Mexico is NOT a Spanish name. It is an Aztec name for place of the Aztec Gods.
