A market segment is a sub-set of a market made up of people or organizations with one or more characteristics that cause them to demand similar product and/or services based on qualities of those products such as price or function.

A true market segment meets all of the following criteria: it is distinct from other segments, it is homogeneous within the segment; it responds similarly to a market stimulus, and it can be reached by a market intervention. The term is also used when consumers with identical product and/or service needs are divided up into groups so they can be charged different amounts. A perfect example of this would be the Oberweis milk in a glass container versus your average milk in a plastic bottle. They also deliver milk in a glass container to their customer's home, just like back in the old days! That is totally worth it paying a few more bucks than your regular milk.

Oberweis offers different varieties such as their ice cream, Pizza, and milk to attract different customers. For example, the milk would attract your normal household mother who just want fresh milk. Whereas, the ice cream would attract the little kids while their mother are getting milk or simply college students who wants pizza to eat and study in their dorms.
