Why was Abraham Lincoln on the US cent and 5 dollar bill?

He is widely considered to be one of the greatest American presidents. He led the country through the Civil War, freed the slaves, and preserved the Union.

His picture was put on the cent in 1909 in honor of the centennial of his birth. It was was placed on the bill in 1914, in conjunction with the construction of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington.
