In short, the iron ore hematite (Fe2O3).
Iron is a raw material and you technically don't need to refine anything to get it.
But because iron oxidizes (rusts) in the presence of oxygen, the iron ore must be heated and melted to remove the oxygen. During the process, the iron is usually mixed with carbon to increase it's strength. The end result is steel.
