If you're starting an exercise program at the same time you're starting the diet, you'll probably build some muscle mass. Recognize that muscle weighs more than fat so you may actually gain a few pounds at first, but those are GOOD pounds which will make you look better as the fat starts to burn off. Second, it's the MUSCLES that burn the calories. As the muscle mass increases you'll find it easier to burn away the fat that you don't want. Your body is just going through a little adjustment to the change in lifestyle. It sounds like you're doing the right thing, just stick with it.

I concur with the above. Judging the success of a diet and exercise program by weight loss/gain only can be cause for concern. Don't be put off by this phenomenon -- keep at the strength training. Not only will it increase muscular strength and density, it will strengthen joints and bones and help prevent osteoporosis. And, like state above, more muscle lends to a higher metabolism, allowing you to burn off calories faster.
