Why do penguins have body fat?

Penguins have body fat primarily for insulation and energy storage. The layer of fat, or blubber, helps to keep them warm in their cold, aquatic environments, maintaining their body temperature. Additionally, this fat serves as a reserve of energy during times when food is scarce, such as during molting or breeding seasons when they may not be able to feed regularly.
