What team won the first afl grand final?

Collingwood in 1990 - before then it was called the VFL. The first VFL grand final game was won by Fitzroy - over Essendon, in 1898. However, the previous year, 1897 - the first of the VFL, the premiers were Essendon, as the winning side was simply the team which had won the most games for the season.
