Respect them is always the first step. You should also go out of your way sometimes to help them out. Open doors for them, and ask if they need help. Plus, check your behavior. Is there something that you do that makes them feel disrespected by you? Remember, if you don't respect a person they have every right in the world not to put their trust in you.
