Why did they use a cross to crucify Jesus and not a square etc?

I believe that the crucifix and crucifixion had been around and been used for a while as a prime way of humiliation and torture. So logically it makes sense that they used it to crucify Jesus. ( it was the guillotine/ electric chair of its time)
