As the dutch were poor and leather was expensive the invention from "Klompen" was an evolution from the first sandal shaped footbeds with long leather laces held in place. These leather footbeds worn by the Romans became wooden footbeds for the Dutch. The evolution has shaped the Klompen as we know them now. There is still a female version available with a 2.5 cm wide strap over the top. Colour and shape varies per province or district

Wooden shoes are very warm and comfortable to wear but you have to get use to them. Relative easy to make by hand from fast growing soft woods (Popular and Willow)
