Describe medical care after battles during the civil war?

In a Word - AWFUL! Three out of four operations done in field hospitals were amputations. Bullets used did such damage, amputation was the only hopeful way of saving a life. Unfortunately, medicine was still rather primative, having no understanding of sterilization or how infections progressed. Many more soldiers died fir these reasons after operations.
