Your O2 sensor tells your computer how the engine is running. If your air/fuel mixture is too rich, it will try to make it leaner, or vice-versa. The computer will only adjust it so much before it stops and turns on the check engine light. You can ignore it for a while, but eventually you will damage your catalytic converter and your engine.
