The Caves of Lascaux are a Palaeolithic cave site in Montignac in the Dordogne region of France, containing the most famous cave paintings ever.

Discovered in 1940 and opened to the public in 1948, but the level of interest was so great that the cave was closed to the public in 1963, amongst fears that the paintings were suffering harm.

A copy of the cave was made and this was opened to the public in 1983.
