The scary truth is that the answer is almost impossible to determine. New drugs and medicines go through many trials and a lot of research, but the results of those trials and studies are not all revealed. There is a lot of concern and debate about this. Companies that produce medicines are of course interested in making and marketing products that will be profitable for them. However, they also have a lot of control over testing procedures. It is known that the results of roughly half of all studies done are never made known. When you stop to think about it, companies will be motivated to release studies that indicate the usefulness of their products. Even if companies are completely and blindingly honest, (and who is going to bet a lot of money that this happens?) there is the appearance of wrongdoing by withholding ANY test results at all. And frankly, if they are honest, what do they fear by withholding results? Any faulty studies can be discovered by a fair and open peer review.
