Farmers grew a multitude of various crops. However, predominately, their greatest commodity is the sacred olive of the east. Olives date back to the archaic era of 6000BC and the same seeds of these ancient olives are cultivated to this day. Similarly, as Greece is an arid and tumultuous country it is hard to reap a plentiful harvest. In the south, peaches and nectarines are grown in bounteous numbers. This is due to the huge number of goats in the south, whose potent faeces act as a nutrient-rich fertiliser.
