In 1867 the US acquired Midway island?

Captain N.C. Middlebrooks of the sailing ship Gambia claimed the uninhabited Island later called Midway for the United States on 5 July 1859. On 28 August 1867, Captain William Reynolds of the USS Lackawanna formally took possession of the atoll for the United States.
