Why was the book of the dead made?

The book of the dead was placed in tombs in order to facilitate the dead person with the hymns and texts related with obstacles of afterlife he had to overcome.

There are vesrions as the hymns and texts have been changed during the centuries of Egyptian history from the Theban Recension to the Third Intermediate period and finally to the Saite period
