At the start of his reign, Henry VIII's full title was "Henry the Eighth, by the Grace of God, King of England, France and Lord of Ireland". After 1521 he styled himself "Henry the Eighth, by the Grace of God, King of England, France, Defender of the Faith and Lord of Ireland", after he was awarded the title "Defender of the Faith by Pope Leo X.
