Is there an expiration date on batteries?

The expiration date given on batteries is to limit duration of liability/ responsibility to manufacturer. Most of the sealed and properly stored batteries will be good enough to use few months after expiration but not after few years. At the same time it is risky to use old batteries as they tend to leak spoiling expensive equipments.
