What does it mean if something is described as ground breaking?

Ground Breaking is a term that generally applies to something that is completely different then the norm and then also changes the norm. For example Elvis was ground breaking for Rock and Roll because he changed how music was produced. Or the internet was ground breaking as it completely changed how people attain information.
