Do cellphones cause fires

It cannot cause a fire while filling your gas tank, but you can be shocked due to electrostatic shock by a lack of grounding of the gas tanks, so you don't want to use the phone while pumping. Numerous experiments have been conducted in order to establish safety measures. Results so far have proved inconclusive. Nothing tested has caught fire, but that doesn't mean it never will.


There has been some evidence that it is not the cell phone, but going back inside the vehicle and picking up an electrostatic charge from the materials inside and then returning to the pump and discharging a spark which can result in a fire. I recommend that if you are pumping gas, stay outside near the pump until it's done.
