Why do Catholics celebrate the saints?

Catholics recognize the saints because they were martyrs, who did great things. Some of them died for their faith. Many saints are recognized by the type of deeds they did while alive. The apostles are recognized as saints because they were Jesus' followers and preached the Word of God. Many Catholics look to saints for guidance as they were human, and were susceptible to the same human flaws as the followers of Christ in today's age.
