The civil war was based on many things. The north was more industrialized then the south, and so they relied on different things and had two different cultures. The south had a demand for slaves, and after Uncle Tom's Cabin as published, the way slaves were treated was exposed to people in the south. And so there was an uprising number of new abolitionists demanding an end to slavery. In the north, because it was so industrialized they did not need to buy things from other countries - they made all the good their. To make more money, the government put a tariff (tax) on imported goods. This did not make the south happy AT ALL. The south relied on cotton, and they sold the majority of it to other countries. Instead of paying for the cotton with money, they gave the south a kind of credit to get thing from their country. Now that there was a tax on imported goods, the south was getting less bang for their buck. The major reason for the civil war was states rights. The north stood for the country being unified, and because of all of the conflicting cultures and view points and such the south DID NOT feel as strong about being unified. They felt as though the government had too much power, and they were being suffocated. They stood for states rights! and the north stood for protecting their unified country.(:
