Here are the rules for spelling ing verbs. Rule number 2 applies to invite:

Spelling of verb + ing.

1. Usually add -ing to base form of the verb.

go + -ing â†’ going, wear + -ing â†’ wearing, eat + -ing â†’ eating.

2. Verbs that end in one -e, drop the e.

smoke â†’ smoking, hope â†’ hoping, come â†’ coming, write â†’ writing.

Verbs that end in -ee don't drop an e.

agree â†’ agreeing, see â†’ seeing.

3. Verbs of one syllable with one vowel and one consonant, the consonant is doubled.

stop â†’ stopping, run â†’ running, get â†’ getting.

If the final consonant is -y or -w it is not doubled.

Play â†’ playing, show â†’ showing.
