It depends on what your doing with a gun in your car and your local state and or county/city laws. If you have a legal gun that has a permit or is transported in a legal way than your not braking the law. But when the Officer comes up one of the first things you need to do is tell that Officer that you have a gun in your car for hunting, range shooting, etc. You should also have it locked in a secured case and have it unloaded and you should also tell him that as well. Most of the time they will ask you to get out of the car and make sure everything is secured correctly, and ask for your permit if one is needed. And other information for your car.

Now if your driving your car with a handgun, rifle, shotgun, etc for criminal activity, that is NOT legal and you will need to tell the Officer that and he will get you out of the car and detain you. It is also important not to have your hands on the weapon or close to it because they may think your going for it and shoot you. Also they may send you to jail or take the gun and just give you a ticket or fine. So don't have a gun in your car or on you if this is your purpose.

So what I'm saying is you need to check your local state laws off of your state's website, or just go up to an Officer and ask them how to legally transport your weapon before doing so. I would recommend going off of what your states website says but since I don't know what state you live in here's a website that may help you. Just make sure to click on your state.
