What was Germany's significance in World War 2?

German forces led by Hitler began overtaking countries nearby, expanding their armed forces and generally breaking the Treaty of Versailles on all levels that had been signed to end WWI. Part of their motivation was to get rid of Communist rule, another to recover at least somewhat from the Depression, but mostly it was greed that motivated Hitler and his followers which set off the events of WWII.
