You want to get it cooled down as quickly as possible, as with cold running water, or ice. The next thing depends upon how big the burn area is... if is less than 2 inches by 2 inches then can simply split open a piece of aloe vera and tape the gooey side directly to the burn. Put on a new piece every 6-8 hours for 3-4 days, and will usually heal up fast. If the burn is larger then you need to go to a doctor to make sure it doesn't need to be debrided. That is where they take the dead skin off so that it doesn't get infected or rot.

If it is a sunburn you want to keep it completely out of the sun until it is healed. And you can smear on a layer of noxema to keep it cooled down. You might need to add more every 8 hours or so. If you use the numbing spray on it you will peel MUCH WORSE than if you don't. That is the trade off. Less pain, but longer healing. I prefer the noxema which doesn't make it peel more, and helps it to heal faster.
