An old man turned 98 then he won the lottery the next day. Can someone explain irony in this example?

It's not ironic, just bad luck. Irony might be if he played the same numbers for 80 years, and then when he gives up, his numbers are finally drawn. I don't know for sure though, any time I talk about irony, my wife tells me I'm wrong.
