The lithosphere is the rigid outer layer of the Earth, encompassing the crust and the uppermost part of the mantle. It extends from the surface down to about 100 kilometers (62 miles) below the Earth’s surface. This layer is characterized by its solid composition and is involved in tectonic activities, including plate movements.
