What method of hunting was replaced by spears and bows and arrows?

Before bows and arrows, there were spears. People would sneak up to an animal and throw their spears at it. After it was down on the ground, they would stab it to death. Before spears......well, people really didn't have much but stones. And that goes back a LONG way! I guess they just threw stones at an animal or used their slingshots back then.
