The Soft-Hearted Sioux is a story about a Sioux boy who is born to a proud warrior family, and even at 16 has a promising life before him as a brave. This boy, however, goes off to live with white men for 9 years and comes back with "the soft-heart of Christ" and his Bible having replaced the heart of his people. He finds his father ill, shoos away the medicine man and clings to his Bible. His subsequent attempts at evangelism fail and he and his family are pushed out of the camp. He is unable to provide meat for his family and is forced to kill a cow belonging to a white man in a frantic effort to save his father, but in the process kills a white man to keep the meat. When he arrives at the tepee, his father is dead. The next day he directs his mother back to the camp and turns himself in. We last see him in his cell, a changed man, strong in heart, and ready for his inevitable death.
