Countries like Portugal and Spain at that time, were seeking all the time for new lands in order to find treasures, mainly gold. They also used slaves to cultivate and mining those new territories and sent gold, precious stones and grains, fruits and specialties from the crops, to their countries. The main reason obviously was to become richer, and more important to the other countries.
