In the 1976 U.S. presidential election, neither Gerald Ford nor Jimmy Carter received around 6 million popular votes, which were cast for third-party candidates. Most notably, independent candidate Eugene McCarthy and libertarian candidate Roger MacBride contributed to this total. This accounted for about 6% of the overall popular vote in that election.
