Why people wear elephant hair bracelet?

African people wear these bracelets (aside from the fact that they look cool) as they believe elephants are the conduit between the heavens and earth. Each knot on the bracelet represents something such as earth etc.
The hair must be boiled after it is found (they don't hunt elephants for these any more) and after it cools it maintains its shape.
