What was the fate of sir Walter Raleigh's Roanoke settlement?

The fate of Sir Walter Raleigh's Roanoke settlement is unknown. The settlers disappeared mysteriously sometime between 1587 and 1590, leaving behind only the Word "Croatoan" carved on a post. The exact reason for their disappearance remains a historical mystery.
