Solar energy can be converted into electricity using photo-voltaic cells which are piezo-electric components and create a current when they are in light.

Solar energy is also converted to usable heat using water based solar panels connected to a buildings radiators or hot water supply.

Solar energy can also be converted into potential energy by certain wavelengths energising electrons in an atom to move to a different energy level. This is normally released back as light but will be a certain colour dependant on the wavelength absorbed.
