Is an arachnid a bug or an insect?

The biological classification of arachnid includes Spiders, mites, and some other spider-like creatures; they are not insects although they do have a resemblance to insects (however insects have 6 legs while arachnids have 8 legs). Arachnids can be considered to be bugs. Bug is a loosely defined term.
