When did model airplanes first become popular as toys?

Some of the earliest model airplane kits date back to as early as 1910. They retailed for $4 to $6 which was a substantial amount of money considering that the average working-class salary was $20 to $25 per week. Model airplanes were obviously toys for rich children as the average family would never be able to afford them.
