The 115th Infantry Regiment was one of the three regiments of the US 29th "Blue & Grey" Infantry Division. This unit was called into service early in the war and began training. However, their training continued in the US and in England for a long period in preparation for the D-Day invasion of Normandy, France.
The 115th Regiment was supposed to land behind the 116th Regiment(29 Division) on Omaha Beach and provide support in the advance off of the beach. Instead, their landing craft drived eastward and they landed behind the 18th Regimen(1st US Infantry Division) just east of St. Laurent. By nightfall, they were still north of the ST. Laurent-Colleville road. They fought in the vicinity of where the American Cemetery is located at Colleville sur Mur.
Recommend this book that is about a group of men in the 116th Regiment, 29 Division, but it will provide a glimpse into the training and casualties of this unit: "The Bedford Boys" by Alex Kershaw.
