The traditional purpose of Lent is the penitential preparation of the believer through prayer, penance, repentance, almsgiving, and self-denial from the 40-day period between Ash Wednesday and Easter.
During Lent, many Christian believers commit to fasting or giving up certain types of luxury or bad (sinful) habits as a form of penitence.
Someone may fast by giving up drinking coffee or eating candies or chocolate or abstain from watching TV.
