How do living things depend on non living things for survival in a desert?

Snakes or salamanders use the sand or rocks for camouflage. They can also use cacti (cactus) for water. There are birds that are small and can get passed the needles to drink the water or make a home in it to raise young. The needles also provides protection from other enemies.
