Why do rivers continue to flow and not run out water?

Rivers always have some source of input from their tributaries. Water generally takes a fairly long time to work its way through a large drainage basin, long enough to keep a river fed between rain events. In addition, some streams are fed by groundwater or melting snow and ice from mountains.
