State wildlife officials said they are not sure how a baby shark wound up in the Tennessee River.

A couple searching for arrowheads found the approximately foot-long shark in Decatur County this past weekend. Wildlife officer Keith Byrd said he is not sure what kind of shark it is, but said it is definitely a shark.

Finding salt water creatures in the Tennessee River is rare but not unheard of. In past years, officers have found other aquatic creatures in the river, including a blue crab. Byrd said it is likely the shark swam into Decatur County from the Gulf of Mexico.

While some species of sharks can travel in fresh water there are no wild sharks that are native to Tennessee. It is possible to see sharks in Tennessee if you visit some of the local zoos and aquariums.
