When did the rule in baseball change concerning 4 fouls and your out?

The rule regarding foul balls in Baseball changed in 1901. Prior to this change, a player could be called out after hitting four foul balls on the same at-bat. The current rule allows a batter to hit an unlimited number of foul balls, except for the third strike, before being declared out.
