Why was Mike Collins described as the loneliest man?

Because during the moon landing, whilst Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the moon he stayed orbiting the moon for a day, completely alone. At times he lost all communications meaning he had no idea what was happening on the moon or earth.
