Does turning energy saving light bulbs on and off each time you leave a room shorten their life?

Modern CFL and led bulbs will not be appreciably effected by the number of on-off cycles. Older tubular florescent lamps have a filament for start up, and lifespan can be reduced by number of cycles. If operated outside rated environmental temperatures, however, some lamps can be stressed by heating and cooling of the electronics.
