What are the advantages of perceptual set?

Perceptual set is the tendency to notice certain things. It is advantageous because it can be trained. For instance, a policeman might be trained to notice car registration numbers, or physical characteristics of people they meet. An active military serviceman might be trained to notice abnormal activity around his military base.
