What is a climate feedback loop?

It's when something happens (like ice melting in the Arctic) and the result of that (less shiny reflecting ice) means that the first thing happens faster and faster. Like a loop! (The sun's heat hits more land and dark water where it is absorbed, so land and water capture more heat than the shiny ice did. This makes the atmosphere warmer, so more ice melts!)

Another example:

1. Ice melts in the Arctic because we have been burning fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) and adding extra carbon dioxide to the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
2. Fossil fuel companies fight to drill for oil and gas from the seabed which used to be protected with a floating ice cover. This gas and oil is burnt, releasing MORE carbon dioxide.
3. This warms the Arctic more! So more ice melts, and more companies fight for drilling rights!
