It will vary depending upon the thickness and density of the breast. Compression is extremely important to mammograms because it will spread out the tissue to create diagnostic images. Without compression, the tissue will overlap, creating the appearance of masses or irregularities in the tissue which could potentially be seen as dangerous or malignant, resulting in additional imaging studies, biopsies, etc.. Images without adequate compression will also be less crisp and clear. A good mammographer will inform the patient ahead of time that she can say when the pressure is to a point that she cannot stand more, and will stop adding compression at that time. Some women's breasts are more fibrous, so they may be more sensitive to compression.
