Why is the common name ''bass'' a misrepresentation of what the fish really is?

Many fish are called bass. The black basses of freshwater, the largemouth, smallmouth and allies, are actually just large sunfish.

The true basses are the Morone family, which includes striped bass, white bass, yellow bass, white perch.
